I whipped up this super cute tote bag for a 4 year old’s birthday last week! We filled it with used and wonderful children’s books right off my son’s bookshelf. The birthday boy loved it!
I ordered a 20″ x 20″ piece of laminated cotton in superhero word motif from Laminates on etsy.com and it was perfect for this project. The laminated side is glossy and slick, fun! You can make a tote bag any size you want, this is what I chose. The finished bag measured approximately 12″ tall, 10″ wide with 1.5″ sides and bottom width.
Cut 2 pieces 13″ tall by 10″ wide (leaving the end piece 7″ x 20″)
With remaining piece cut 3 strips 2 ” wide.
Cut strips into lengths ~ two of them 13″ long for the sides, and one 11″ long for the bottom
With right sides together sew side strips along 13″ sides of front and back panels
Sew 11″ strip into bottom…this is where my unorthodox methods come into play…there are no nice gussets or even nice corners, I just jimmied it right in!
To finish, I zigzagged the seam allowances. Then folded the top over about 3/4″ and topstitched. Next I measured out some nylon strap about 20″ each and sewed them on, voila!
